RING-BACKUP 6V6923 - Caterpillar

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high fuel rail pressure. Also, or use this procedure if the following event codes are active.

Engine Injector Metering Rail #1 Pressure : High - Moderate severe The fuel rail pressure is higher than the trip point. The code is logged.
The ECM will derate the engine.
Latched DM1 diagnostic- requires key cycle to clear the code.
Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.

1. Diagnostic Codes
A. Establish communication with Cat® Electronic Technician (ET). Check for active diagnostic codes.
Diagnostic Codes
Result: Active diagnostic codes are present.
Repair: Troubleshoot the active diagnostic codes before proceeding.
Result: Active diagnostic codes are not present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Fuel Rail Pressure
A. Check the fuel rail pressure in Cat ET.
Fuel rail pressure
Result: The fuel pressure is not within specification.
Repair: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Air in Fuel - Test"
Result: The fuel pressure is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Fuel System
A. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System" for additional information.
B. Check the return to tank restriction. Refer to Technical Marketing Information (TMI) for the specific data.
Fuel System
Result: The fuel system is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The fuel system is not OK.
Repair: Replace the fuel filters. Clean the primary filter/water separator of debris. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for details.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. High-Pressure Fuel Pump
A. Monitor "Fuel Rail Pressure (absolute)" during engine shutdown to check that the rail pressure sensor circuit ir OK and there is not a problem with the sensor.
Fuel pump
Result: The pressure is not within specification.
Repair: Replace the high-pressure fuel pump.
Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump - Remove"
Result:A diagnostic code in Table 1 is still active.
Repair: Contact the Technical Communicator.
