Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an occurrence of a low fuel flow rate. Also use this procedure if the following diagnostic code is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".
Table 1
Engine Event
J19396 Code and Description Conditions which Generate the Code System Response
1440-17 Engine Fuel Flow Rate 1 : Low - least severe (1) The exhaust emissions are too lean and the signal for the fuel actuator is above a duty cycle of 95%. The code is logged. Probable Causes
High fuel temperature
Faulty gas pressure regulator or low fuel supply pressure
Obstructions in the fuel supply
Condensation in the gas supplyRecommended Actions
High Fuel Temperature
The system is designed for fuel temperatures less than 60° C (140° F). For optimum performance, the maximum recommended differential temperature for the fuel and air is 2.8° C (5° F). Place carburetor power valve in full rich (R) position.Measure the temperature of the gas that is entering the valve for the fuel actuator. If the fuel temperature is high, determine the cause of the high fuel temperature. Check for proper operation of the equipment that treats the gas prior to the engine.Perform the necessary repairs.Faulty Gas Pressure Regulator or Low Fuel Supply Pressure
Check the outlet pressure from the gas pressure regulator that supplies the engine with gas. A naturally aspirated engine requires a gas supply that is regulated to a pressure between 10.3 to 68.9 kPa (1.5 to 10 psi). The fuel supply must not fluctuate more than 1.72 kPa (0.25 psi) between no engine load and full engine load. A turbocharged (high-pressure gas) requires a gas supply that is regulated to a pressure between 82.7 to 172.4 kPa (12 to 25 psi). The fuel supply must not fluctuate more than 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) between no engine load and full engine load.If the pressure of the gas supply is too low, adjust the gas pressure regulator in order to achieve the correct pressure. If the pressure fluctuates between no load and full load by more than the specification, examine the diameter of the piping, fittings, and valves. Also, look for restrictions in the piping. The restrictions may be the cause of the pressure fluctuations. If the gas pressure regulator cannot be adjusted to the correct setting, repair or replace the regulator.Obstructions in the Fuel Supply
Check the fuel filter for restriction. Replace the fuel filter, if necessary.Inspect the fuel supply lines to the valve for the fuel actuator for obstructions. Clean the lines and make repairs, as needed.Check the Gas Shutoff Valve (GSOV) for proper operation. Verify that the valve is fully open when the valve is energized. Verify that the GSOV does not stick in a partially open position. Repair the GSOV. Replace the GSOV, if necessary.Condensation in the Gas Supply
If liquid is present in the system, determine the
