Illustration 1 g03276859The CID 3255 is associated with the "Manual/Remote Mode" switch. The FMI 06 diagnostic code is recorded when the Remote Control ECM reads the current of the switch as being above normal. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The switch has failed
Switch contact "6" (wire H817-OR(Orange)) is shorted to ground
The ECM has failed, however ECM failure is unlikelyBefore performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all of the connections in the circuit are clean and secure. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 3255 FMI 06 is active before performing this procedure.

Remote Control Closed Open Test Step 1. CHECK THE SWITCH
Disconnect the switch from the circuit.
Place the switch in remote position.
Check for continuity between contact 6 and contact 5 of the switch connector.
Check for an open pin 5 to pin 4.
Place the switch in manual position.
Check for continuity between contact 5 and contact 4 of the switch connector.
Check for an open pin 5 to pin 6. Expected Result:The continuity check agrees with Table 1.Results:
OK - The continuity check agrees. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The continuity check does not agree. The switch has failed.Repair: Replace the switch. Verify that the new switch corrects the diagnostic code.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE H817-OR(Orange) CIRCUIT
A. Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position.
Reconnect the Manual/Remote mode switch to the harness.
Place the Manual/Remote mode switch in the Remote position.
Place the Manual override switch (in cab) in the Manual position. Note: If the manual override switch is a momentary switch. Hit the manual (hand) part of the switch. Only the manual light will remain on while in manual mode.
Pull the H818-GN(Green) wire from pin 20 of the RCM.
Observe the status of active diagnostic codes in the system master using Cat ET. Expected Result:The active Diagnostic code is CID 3255 FMI 03. Results:
OK - The active Diagnostic code is CID 3255 FMI 03. Repair: Reconnect the RC system harness connectors. Verify that the diagnostic code has been corrected. If the cause of the problem is not found, contact the Cat Dealer for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". STOP
NOT OK - The active Diagnostic code changes to CID 3255 FMI 12Repair: Short to ground in the H817-OR(Orange) wire. Check the harness for the short and repair. Reconnect the RC system harness connectors. Verify that all active codes have been corrected.STOP
