are several reasons why a software program needs to be flashed to the ECM.When the ECM has been replaced and the new ECM does not come with the latest version of software already loaded, the ECM will have to be flashed. When certain types of operational problems are occurring on the machine and the cause of the problem can not be found, flashing the latest software program for the ECM on your machine may help to alleviate the problem. Some examples of these types of problems can be:
Problems that occur for which no hardware related cause can be found.
Problems that repeatedly occur and then go away when the key start switch is turned OFF and then turned back ON.
Problems that appear to be caused by the ECM.Before suspecting the ECM as the cause of these types of problems, obtain the latest version of ECM software for your machine configuration. Flash the new software version to the ECM. Operate the machine in order to determine whether the problem has been corrected. The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) contains the program WinFlash. WinFlash is used in order to load software into the ECM. Note: The 171-4400 Communication Adapter II can be used to flash software to all of the following components on the machine: The Machine Control ECM, the Implement Control 2 ECM, the Engine Control ECM, the Soft Switch Panel and the Monitor.Perform the following procedure in order to flash new software to the ECM.
Procedure
Verify that the software file that you are flashing is the latest version for your machine configuration.
