Remove & Install Inlet & Exhaust Valves
Start By:a. remove cylinder head assembly Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Use Tool (A) to compress springs (2).2. Remove locks (1). 3. Remove Tool (A), rotocoil (3), springs (2), washer (4), the valve seal and the inlet or exhaust valve from the cylinder head. 4. Use Tool (B) to check spring force. Guidelines For Reusable Parts; Valves And Valve Springs, SEBF8002 and SEBF8034 have the procedure and specifications necessary for checking used valves and valve springs.5. Do steps 1 through 4 again for the remainder of the inlet and exhaust valves. The following steps are for installation of the inlet and exhaust valves.6. Put clean engine oil on the valve stem.7. Install the inlet and exhaust valve and washer (4). Use Tool (C) and a plastic hammer to install the valve seal. Install springs (2) and rotocoil (3) in the cylinder head.8. Use Tool (A) to compress springs (2).9. Install locks (1) with the thick end up.
Locks can be thrown from valve when compressor is released, if they are not in their correct position on valve stem.
10. Remove the compressor and hit the valve with a soft faced hammer to be sure locks are in their correct position on the valve.11. Do steps 6 through 10 again for the remainder of the inlet and exhaust valves.
