Install 1400 Frame and 1600 Frame Single Bearing Generators
Verify the position of the flex coupling plates and the rotor in relation to the front adapter mounting flange. The position must be known before installing a new or a rebuild generator. Note: There is no need to set the end play for the 1400 frame generator. The wave washer will keep the rotor in the correct position axially.Note: The 1600 frame generators will have rotor end play. The rear bearing can move axially in the bearing bracket. The end play must be set prior to generator installation. Verify that the rotor is in a mid position between the front of the generator and the rearward end of the generator. Some end play must still exist.Note: The 3500 engine utilizes an SAE00 housing and an SAE21 flywheel. Therefore, the axial dimension is zero mm (zero inch). The axial dimension is measured from the mounting face of the front adapter housing (9) of the generator, to the front of the flexible coupling (8). The nominal tolerance is plus 3.2 mm (0.125 inch) and minus 3.2 mm (0.125 inch). Refer to Illustration 2.Note: The location of the hub will depend on the number of flexible plates that are needed for the generator. There are four flexible coupling plates that are used with the 1400 frame generator.Note: There are six flex coupling plates that are used with the 1600 frame generator.
Some type of method must be used in order to ensure that the air gap is equal between the rotor assembly and the stator. For example, high-density plastic strips (1) can be placed in more than one location between the rotor (2) and the stator (3). The rotor can be supported with a suitable lifting device in order to approximately center the rotor in the front adapter housing.

Move the rotor assembly to the rearmost position. Position a straight edge (5) across the diameter of front bracket (6). Ensure that the distance from the edge of the straight edge (5) to each of the locations (4) is the same. This procedure ensures that the rotor and the front bracket are true with respect to each other. This procedure ensures that the rotor is set at the nominal zero mm (zero inch) axial position. Refer to Illustration 2.
