Rework Procedure
Replace the 157-2156 Connecting Rod Bearings on the serial numbers listed above with the 101-4181 Connecting Rod Bearings. Install new 6V9801 Nuts during re-assembly of the connecting rods. Refer to August 1997 Engine News Article for torquing instructions.
The procedures below should be performed on the new 101-4181 Connecting Rod Bearings before installation.
Record the date code on the 101-4181 Connecting Rod Bearing and forward this to Rick Parrish at PARRIRL@CAT.COM.In addition, please return any 157-2156 connecting rod bearing that was found to have rotated, to Lafayette. The address is:

Tin Flashing Removal Procedure
* Removal of the tin flashing from the back of the 101-4181 bearing will increase friction between the bearing and connecting rod.* Note only the 101-4181 bearing should be used.* Attention should be given to proper handling procedures for tin.* The back of the bearing has what appears to be a dull gray/white appearance. Lightly buff the back of the bearing using Type A Medium Scotch Brite pad. Buff the bearing from end to end - not side to side. The dull gray/white appearance will change to a silver. Refer to attachd photos. Use only Type A Medium Scotch Brite pad. Use of other materials such as emery cloth will remove steel backing which will reduce crush.

* Treating the rod cap will increase friction on the surface for the bearing.* Pull 151-5207 connecting rod caps - process two caps at a time.* Clean nut seat surfaces with alcohol.* Tape nut seat surfaces with duct tape. Trim tape to shape of nut seat surface.
