Install timing advance (1). Install retainer (2) and bolts (3) .
Hand tighten bolts (3) until there is a slight amount of friction between the retainer and the timing advance (1). The friction will hold the timing advance against the timing gears. The friction will prevent backlash while the gears are being turned to the proper position.
Remove the timing bolt. Turn the flywheel until the timing pin will go into the groove in the fuel injection pump camshaft. Install the timing pin.
Turn the flywheel in a clockwise direction for 30 degrees. (Turn the flywheel in the opposite direction of engine rotation.)
Turn the flywheel counterclockwise until the number one piston is at top center in the compression stroke. Put the timing bolt in the flywheel.
Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 25 N m (19 lb ft). Remove the timing pin from the injector housing.
Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 230 15 N m (170 11 lb ft). Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel.
Turn the crankshaft for two complete revolutions. Check the timing again. The timing pin should go into the groove in the fuel injection pump camshaft with the timing bolt in the flywheel.Note: Be sure to remove the timing pin and the timing bolt if the timing is correct.
Repeat step 2 through step 8 if the timing is not correct.

Install bolts (4) and cover (5) .
