Install two 152.4 mm (6 inch) guide bolts in the axle center housing.Note: Use the original shim pack or a new shim pack of the same thickness. If the original shim pack is not available, use 70 percent of a new shim pack.
Apply lubricant to the O-ring seal and install the O-ring seal on the pinion housing.
Install the shim pack on the pinion housing.
Install the pinion gear assembly in the differential housing.
Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to position the pinion gear assembly on the housing. The weight of the pinion housing is 68 kg (150 lb).
Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 300 40 N m (220 30 lb ft).Note: The required thickness of the shim pack may change when the tooth contact pattern is adjusted. Refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Differential Backlash and Bearings - Adjust" for more information on adjusting the tooth contact pattern.
When all adjustments have been made to the differential assembly, remove the two guide bolts and Tooling (A). Install the remaining two bolts (1) and tighten bolts (1) to the specified torque.End By:
