(4) Hole that is in the flywheel for locating the top center of the No. 1 piston
(5) Location of the plug in the flywheel housing
Install Tools (1), (2), and (3). Remove plug (5) from the flywheel housing. Thread the 136-4632 Timing Pin into the machined hole in the flywheel housing.
Use the ratchet to rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until the timing pin drops into the hole that is in the flywheel. The No. 1 piston is now at the top center position. Note: If you turn the flywheel beyond the point of timing bolt installation, the flywheel must be turned clockwise for at least 30 degrees of rotation. Then turn the flywheel counterclockwise until the timing drops into the hole in the flywheel. This procedure will remove the play from the gears.

Location of the rocker arms for the No. 1 cylinder
If No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke, the inlet valve and the exhaust valve for the No. 1 piston are closed. There will be some free play between the rocker arms and the valves. The rocker arms should be loose enough to move up and down by hand.If No. 1 piston does not appear to be on the compression stroke, follow these steps:
Remove the timing bolt.
Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise by 360 degrees. Note: If you turn the flywheel beyond the point of timing bolt installation, the flywheel must be turned clockwise for at least 30 degrees of rotation. Then turn the flywheel counterclockwise until the timing drops into the hole in the flywheel. This procedure will remove the play from the gears.
Install the timing bolt. Verify that the No. 1 piston is now at the top center position on the compression stroke by checking for play in the rocker arms.
