Start By:a. remove idlers and recoil springs1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the front idler prior to disassembly. The weight of the front idler is 54 kg (120 lb). 2. Remove fill/drain plug (2) from the front idler. Drain the oil from the idler into a suitable container for disposal. The capacity of the front idler is 60 5 ml (2.04 .17 oz). It may be necessary to use Tool (B) to remove two bearings (3) from the shaft of the front idler.3. Using a hammer and punch, remove spring pin (1) from bearing (3). Remove bearing (3) from the shaft of the front idler. If necessary, use Tool (B) to remove bearing (3).4. Remove the other bearing from the shaft of the idler as in step 3. 5. Remove Duo-Cone seal (4) from each bearing (3). 6. Remove O-ring seal (5) from shaft (6). Remove shaft (6) from the front idler. 7. Remove remaining O-ring seal (5) from shaft (6). 8. Remove Duo-Cone seal (4) from each side of the front idler.9. Remove bushing (7) from each side of the front idler. The following steps are for assembly of the front idler.10. Thoroughly clean all parts of the front idler prior to assembly.11. Check the condition of bushings (7). If the bushings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 12. Lower the temperature of bushings (7), and install one in each side of the front idler with a press.13. Temporarily install a bearing (3) on shaft (6). Install the shaft in the front idler. Install the other bearing (3) on the shaft. Check the end play of the shaft. The shaft end play must be 0.1 to 1.2 mm (.004 to .047 in). Remove two bearings (3) and shaft (6) from the front idler.

The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal sheets.14. Install a Duo-Cone seal (4) in each side of the front idler with Tool (A).15. Install a Duo-Cone seal (4) in each bearing (3) with Tool (A).
