Tightening Procedure for Main Bearing Cap Bolts
Install the bearing caps in the correct order of sequence. The bearing caps need to be tightened from the front to the rear. Check the Identifying marks on the caps and the block before tightening.
Lubricate the bolt threads and the washer face with 2P-2506 Thread Lubricant .
Tighten the bolts in accordance with the proper torque specifications. Refer to the appropriate specifications manual for the torque specifications.Reconditioning the Cylinder Block
Measurement of Cylinder Block Top Deck
It is important to know if the deck of the cylinder block has ever been machined. Use 6V-7840 Deck Checking Tool As to accurately determine the height of the cylinder block. The two main bearing bores that contact the lower bar must be the same size. Special calculations must also be made if these bores have been machined for oversized bearings. For more information, refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8187, "Using the 6V-7840 Deck Checking Tool As ". Also, refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF9213, "Measuring the Distance to the Top Deck of C15, C-15, C-16, C18, 3400, C27, and C32 Engines"Cylinder Liner Projection
Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly manual for more information on establishing liner projection.Removal of Material
It is critical to maintain the compression ratio when the cylinder block is reconditioned. The ratio is increased as material is removed from the top deck of the cylinder block.Remove the minimum amount of material when the top deck of the cylinder block is machined in order to eliminate damage. Refer to Table 2 for reconditioning specifications.Repairing the Top Deck of the Cylinder Block with Thermal Spray
Thermal spray can be used to restore the contact surfaces to the original dimensions. An acceptable process is the METCO 6P II Thermospray System. For complete information, submit a form for feedback in the Service Information System for use or applications of the thermal spray.Flatness
The flatness of the top deck must be held for the entire surface. There can be no more than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) over any 150.00 mm (6.000 inch) span.Note: The 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) tolerance for flatness cannot be increased by increasing the 150.00 mm (6.000 inch) length. Refer to Table 2 for specifications.Surface Finish
The maximum surface finish for the entire top deck is 3.2 micrometers (125.00 microinches).Inspect the surface of the top deck for any signs of damage. The surface must be free of nicks, gouges, or any damage that could cause incorrect seating of the liner or incorrect sealing of the gasket. Refer to Table 2 for specifications.Repair Damage to the Block
Three methods of casting repair are available. There are specific applications for each method. only select the method that was approved for the repair that is needed. Carefully follow the guidelines for each repair method. Note: The block should always be thoroughly cleaned following Loch-N-Stich and Cast Iron Welding.Lock-N-Stitch
Holes in the block that are caused by failure of a single rod or cracks in a casting may be repaired using Lock-N-Stitch repair kits.
