FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools and Shop Products Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Be sure the engine has been shut off for a minimum of five minutes to ensure that the accumulator oil pressure is zero. The accumulator is filled with dry nitrogen. Do not remove any hoses until the nitrogen pressure has been released. A bleed valve at the top of the accumulator can be used to release any pressure that is left in the system. Open the bleed valve only one turn to release the pressure. Failure to follow this procedure can result in personal injury.
1. Open bleed valve (1) only one turn to release the nitrogen pressure from the accumulator. Drain the oil from the accumulator in a suitable container for storage or disposal.2. Disconnect hose (2) and (3) to drain the oil from the accumulator. 3. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the accumulator.4. Remove bolt (5) and bracket (6). Remove the four bolts (behind accumulator).5. Remove accumulator (4). The weight of accumulator (4) is 74 kg (163 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the accumulator. 6. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the accumulator.7. Position accumulator (4). The weight of accumulator (4) is 74 kg (163 lb).8. Install bolt (5) and bracket (6). Install the four bolts (behind accumulator). 9. Connect hose (2) and (3) to accumulator (4).10. For the proper filling procedure, refer to the "Testing and Adjusting, Form No. SENR9052."Disassemble & Assemble Accumulators (Cushion Hitch)
Start By:a. remove accumulators (cushion hitch) 1. Remove cover (4) from the accumulator.2. Fasten Tool (A) to the nitrogen charging valve in the top of the accumulator. Open the valve slowly to release the nitrogen from the accumulator.3. Remove valve assembly (3) and washer (5) from head (9).4. Using Tool (B), remove head (9) from the accumulator.5. Remove ring (2) and O-ring seal (1) from the head.6. Remove the plug in the bottom of the accumulator.7. Using a press through the plug hole opening, push piston (6) out the top of the accumulator.8. Remove wear ring (8) and seal assembly (7) from the piston. The following steps are for the assembly of the accumulator. Refer to illustration C73909P1 for assembly of the accumulator.9. Be sure all parts of the accumulator are thoroughly clean prior to assembly.10. Check the condition of the O-ring seals, back-up ring and wear ring used in the accumulator. If any of the parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.11. Install wear ring (8) and seal assembly (7) on piston (6).12. Partially install piston (6) in the accumulator by hand in the position shown. Using a press,
