Testing and Charging the Nitrogen Chamber of the Accumulator
Dry nitrogen is the only gas approved for use in the accumulators. The charging of oxygen gas in an accumulator will cause an explosion. An explosion can be eliminated by using nitrogen gas cylinders with standard CGA (Compressed Gas Association, Inc.) No. 580 connectors. When nitrogen gas is ordered, make sure to order the cylinders with CGA No. 580 connectors.Do not rely on color codes or other methods of identification to tell the difference between nitrogen and oxygen cylinders. In any application, never use an adapter to connect your nitrogen charging group to a valve outlet used on both nitrogen, oxygen, or other gas cylinders. BE SURE YOU USE DRY NITROGEN (99.8% purity).

(1) Accumulator (2) Plug
Remove the cover over plug (2). Ensure that plug (2) is free from any paint or grease and that there is no contamination.
Ensure that the accumulator (1) is in the Closed position.Note: Do not loosen the plug more than 60°. This will cause the pressure to be lost.
Rotate plug (2) counterclockwise by 60°.
Attach 9U-6740 Nitrogen Charging Group or Tooling (B) with 9U-6738 Seal Kit (B3) to accumulator (1) by assembling valve (B3) to the end of accumulator (1) .Note: Ensure that Tooling (B) is secure.
Hold the tee while you thread the charging group onto accumulator (1) in order to ensure that the tee does not turn.Note: Do not turn plug (2) more than two turns.
Loosen the plug. Turn plug (2) counterclockwise up to two turns.
The gauge on 9U-6740 Nitrogen Charging Group (B2) should have a reading of 12500 kPa (1800 psi).
If the accumulator is not at the proper pressure, charge accumulator (1) with 9U-6740 Nitrogen Charging Group or Tooling (B). Use the operational instructions that are provided in the charging group in order to charge accumulator (1) to a pressure of 12500 kPa (1800 psi).
Hand tighten plug (2) clockwise with the tee on the assembly of 9U-6740 Nitrogen Charging Group (B2). Relieve the pressure on the gauge by turning the purge valve counterclockwise. Tighten the plug to a maximum torque of 11.5 N m (8.5 lb ft).
Remove Tooling (B) from accumulator (1). Tighten plug (2) to a maximum torque of 19 to 31 N m (14 to 23 lb ft).
As the nitrogen pressure has been checked and serviced properly, proceed to the following test.Purging and Charging the Hydraulic Pressure in the Accumulator
Adjust the auxiliary pump pressure compensator in order to raise the pressure to 13800 175 kPa (2000 25 psi). Refer to Systems Operations, and Testing and Adjusting, KENR5028, "Pressure Compensator Control - Test and Adjust" for this procedure.
