Turbocharger Heat Shield
Trash and Debris Accumulation
Inspect the area around the turbocharger for the accumulation of trash or other debris. Remove any trash or other debris that is found around the turbocharger and related components.Heat Shield Components
Inspect the heat shields around the turbocharger for the following damage:
Broken or missing hardware
Cover material or insulation material with fluid saturation
Loose cover material or insulation material
Missing pieces of cover material or insulation material
Tears in the cover material or insulation materialIf any of these conditions exist, perform the necessary repairs and/or replace any damaged heat shields around the turbocharger.Turbocharger Mechanical Failure
If the turbocharger fails during engine operation, severe damage to the turbocharger compressor wheel and to the entire engine can result.Turbocharger bearing failures can cause large quantities of oil to enter the intake system and the exhaust system. Loss of engine oil can result in serious engine damage.Do not continue to operate the engine when a turbocharger bearing failure is accompanied by a significant loss of engine performance. Engine smoke and speeding up of the engine with no load are characteristics of a loss of engine performance.
