Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a high engine oil temperature or use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".
Table 1
Diagnostic Code
Description Conditions which Activate The Code System Response
175-0 Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - most severe (3) The engine oil temperature has risen above the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
The engine is shut down.
175-15 Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - least severe (1) The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated. Probable Causes
Faulty oil temperature sensor and/or circuit
Insufficient coolant flow through the oil cooler
Insufficient oil flow through the oil coolerRecommended Actions
Faulty Oil Temperature Sensor and/or Circuit
Check the status of the "Engine Oil Temperature" on Cat ET. The temperature should rise steadily as the engine is warmed. Ensure that the temperature is reasonable. If the status of the "Engine Oil Temperature" on Cat ET is not reasonable, troubleshoot the circuit for the oil temperature sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) - Test".Insufficient Coolant Flow Through the Oil Cooler
Oil Coolers that are in the Jacket Water Cooling Circuit
Check for active event codes that are related to a high engine coolant temperature. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High".Oil Coolers that are in a Separate Circuit Water System
Measure the temperature of the coolant at the inlet and the outlet of the oil cooler. Check that the temperature at the inlet is within specifications. If the inlet temperature is OK, check that the temperature of the coolant at the outlet of the oil cooler is within specifications.A high temperature difference indicates an insufficient flow rate. Investigate the cause of the obstruction. Make the necessary repairs.Insufficient Oil Flow Through the Oil Cooler
Run the engine at normal operating temperature. Determine the pressure differential between the inlet and the outlet of the oil cooler. For comparative data, refer to the Technical Marketing Information (TMI) for your engine. If the pressure differential exceeds the data that is published for the engine, there is an insufficient flow of oil through the oil cooler. Determine the cause of the obstruction. Perform the necessary repairs.Check if the engine oil cooler bypass valve is stuck in the open position. If the valve is stuck open, the oil will bypass the cooler and the oil temperature will increase. The cooler bypass valve is set to open with an oil pressure of 172 21 kPa (25 3 psi).
