Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot high coolant temperature or use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes are active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".

J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate the Code System Response
110-0 Engine Coolant Temperature : High - most severe (3) The engine coolant temperature has exceeded the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
The engine is shut down.
110-15 Engine Coolant Temperature : High - least severe (1) The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated. Probable Causes
High ambient temperature and/or high inlet air temperature
Low coolant level and/or coolant leakage
Insufficient flow of air or coolant through the radiator or heat exchanger
Faulty water temperature regulators
Coolant temperature sensor and/or circuit
Faulty coolant pump
Excessive exhaust restriction
Excessive load on the engine
Incorrect engine timing
Incorrect air/fuel ratioRecommended Actions
High Ambient Temperature and/or High Inlet Air Temperature
Determine if the ambient air temperature is within the design specifications for the cooling system.Check for high inlet air temperature. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Temperature Is High".Determine the cause of the high air temperature. Make corrections, when possible.Low Coolant Level and/or Coolant Leakage
Note: A low coolant level can be the effect of overheating rather than the cause.Check the coolant level.Run the engine to operating temperature. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.Determine whether the leak occurs before the engine overheats.Add coolant, if necessary. If leaking is found, perform the necessary repairs.Insufficient Flow of Air or Coolant Through the Radiator or Heat Exchanger
Radiator
Check the fins of the radiator for obstructions or debris. If the radiator fins are obstructed, clean the fins.Ensure that the fan shroud has the correct placement. Also, ensure that the fan shroud is in good repair. If the application is not equipped with a fan shroud, consider installing a fan shroud. The fan shroud allows the fan to pull a greater amount of air through the cooling fins of the radiator. The fan shroud also directs the air flow across the engine.Check the fan for proper operation. Ensure that the fan is sized correctly for the application. If a problem with the fan is discovered, perform the necessary repairs.Inspect the condition of the fan drive belts. Replace worn fan drive belts.Heat Exchanger
Check for sufficient flow and temperature of the cooling water through the heat exchanger. If the flow of cooling water through the heat exchanger is insufficient, determine the cause of the obstruction. If the temperature of the cooling water is too high, determine the cause of the high temperature. Perform the necessary repairs.Faulty Water Temperature Regulators
If the water temperature regulators are suspect, check for the proper operation of the temperature regulators. Inspect the condition of the seals for the temperature regulators. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Water Temperature Regulator -
