Lift And Tilt Cylinder Drift - Check
For all drift tests, the bucket must be empty.1. Move the machine to an open area so that the bucket can be fully raised.2. Connect the steering frame lock link.3. Engage the parking brake.4. Shift the transmission to neutral.5. Start the engine and warm the hydraulic oil to 65° C (150° F).6. Extend the lift and tilt cylinders numerous times in order to ensure the oil in the cylinders and valves is warm. This may take up to thirty minutes depending on the conditions.7. Fully extend the lift cylinders and position the bucket so that the bottom of the bucket is parallel to the ground. Move the control lever to the HOLD position. Run the engine at low idle speed.
Illustration 1.
Cylinder Drift (A) Distance of rod with the lift and tilt cylinders fully extended. (B) Distance of rod after drift.(1) Pen mark.8. Mark the lift and tilt cylinders with an ink pen.9. Wait five minutes and then check the distance of rod movement. Refer to Illustration 1 for distances to be measured. Cylinder drift = Distance (A) - Distance (B).10. The maximum allowable distance of rod movement for the lift cylinders is 55 mm (2.165 in). The maximum allowable distance of rod movement for the tilt cylinder is 20 mm (.787 in). Oil temperature will drop off quickly once the test has started. Ignore oil temperature during the test. The oil trapped in the cylinders and valves does not pass through the oil cooler, therefore, will remain hot. 11. If the drift is "Not" within Caterpillar specification, check the following:A. Contamination in various system components.B. Cylinder leakage past the piston.C. Check valves or makeup valves that do not seat correctly.D. Poor adjustment or fit of spools in the control valves.E. Check if the machine is equipped with ride control. If so, turn the ride control off and repeat the test. For more lift cylinder and tilt cylinder drift troubleshooting information, see the Service Magazine article listed in the Reference
