The slower water pump speed may result in inadequate coolant flow to remove the heat, and the coolant in the manifold may boil. The boiling coolant expands rapidly, and higher pressure results in coolant loss from the expansion tank when the pressure cap relieves the excess pressure.Low coolant level can eventually cause a cracked manifold. Also, when the coolant boils, it does not transfer heat away from the manifold surface. This results in a hot spot in the manifold, which may cause a crack.
Adaptable To: The new 13 psi, 361865 Radiator Cap Assembly helps prevent "after-boil" and coolant loss. The new radiator cap assembly may be used with the coolant recovery systems. The new radiator cap assembly is effective in production with 4KG1600 and 1SK694. It is adaptable to all earlier engines. Caterpillar strongly recommends the new radiator cap assembly for earlier engines.
