Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 1 g01294950Note: If the timing pins cannot be installed in the camshaft, it may be necessary to loosen the rocker arm adjustment screws and the fuel injector adjustment screws. This is done so that the camshaft can be turned.
Install camshaft timing pin (8) in the camshafts.
Install the timing pin in the crankshaft.

Place plate (7) in position on camshaft drive gear (3). Install bolts (4).
Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of bolt (6). Note: Camshaft drive gear (3) has Marks (S) and (R) on the edge. If the engine is standard rotation, orient Mark (S) toward the primary speed sensor. If the engine is reverse rotation, orient Mark (R) toward the primary speed sensor.
Attach a suitable lifting device to camshaft drive gear (3). The weight of camshaft drive gear (3) is approximately 35 kg (77 lb). Place camshaft drive gear (3) in position on the camshaft. Install washer (5) and bolt (6). Tighten bolt (6) by hand. Note: The first tooth after the extra tooth on speed-timing wheel (1) should be aligned with the primary speed sensor.
Place speed-timing wheel (1) on camshaft drive gear (3). Install bolts (2) and leave the bolts loose. Ensure that speed-timing wheel (1) is in the correct position and tighten bolts (2).
Remove the crankshaft timing pin from the crankshaft.
If only one camshaft drive gear was removed, the camshaft timing pin must be removed from the camshaft with the drive gear that was not removed before the engine is turned.
Turn the flywheel backward about 20 degrees.
If the crankshaft is turned more than 20 degrees, interference between the pistons and the valves may occur.
Turn the flywheel in the direction of the engine rotation until the crankshaft timing pin can be reinstalled in the crankshaft. This procedure holds the backlash in the timing gears in the direction of the normal engine rotation.
If you miss the location of the crankshaft timing pin, do not continue to turn the flywheel in the same direction. If you miss the location of the crankshaft timing pin, repeat Step 8 and Step 9.
Remove the camshaft timing pins and the crankshaft timing pin.
Use Tooling (A) in order to tighten bolt (6) to a torque of 2000 275 N m (1480 200 lb ft).
Strike plate (7) with a punch and a hammer. The punch must be made of brass or bronze. This will seat the gear on the tapered drive shaft. Repeat Step 12. Repeat this procedure until the torque does not change.
Verify the correct camshaft timing. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing".
Remove the crankshaft timing pin and the camshaft timing pin. Return the pins to the correct storage locations.
Install the rear camshaft inspection covers on both sides of the engine.
