The machine serial number is programmed into the Messenger. The serial number is communicated to the Implement ECM 2 and to the other ECM modules on the machine. The Implement ECM 2 will activate the CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code when the machine serial number that is received from the Messenger is incorrect or the serial number has been changed.Note: Ensure that the CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. Check The Serial Number That Is Programmed
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician service tool to the machine service connector.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.
Check the machine serial number that is programmed for the Messenger.Expected Result:The machine serial number is not correct for this machine.Results:
OK - The programmed machine serial number is not the correct serial number for this machine.Repair: Program the complete machine serial number for this machine into the Messenger with the ET service tool. After the correct serial number has been programmed, turn the key start switch to the OFF position. After a minute, turn the key start switch to the ON position. Verify that the diagnostic code has been cleared.STOP
NOT OK - The machine serial number is correct for this machine. The complete serial number for this machine is programmed correctly for the Messenger. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Determine if the CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active.Expected Result:The CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code is not active.Results:
OK - The CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0967 FMI 02 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause is not found, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code cannot be found, replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
