Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
The 274-9872 Fuse will sometimes blow when trying to start the engine in cold temperatures and with weak batteries. Under these conditions the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) may draw an excessive amount of current causing the fuse to blow. Because of the blown fuse the engine ECM will not communicate with the machine ECM or with Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Also, the engine starter motor will engage and run but the engine will not start.Solution
The best way to prevent the above problem from happening is to keep the machines batteries fully charged.

The 274-9872 Fuse is located in the 275-0490 Relay Gp . The relay group is located on the inside of the right-hand frame rail. Refer to Illustration 1 for the location of the relay group. The relay group can be accessed by removing the floor plate of the operator station.Required Tools

Turn screw (2) counterclockwise and remove panel (1). Connect the communication adapter to service tool connector (E1) .
If the engine ECM is not communicating with Cat ET, the fuse may be blown.
Remove the floor plate in the operator station.
Locate the relay group on the right-hand frame rail.

Remove cover (3). Check fuse (4). If fuse (4) is blown, replace the fuse with a new 274-9872 Fuse .
Replace cover (3) .
