Parts stock action needed PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR REPLACING THE TOP PISTON RING ON CERTAIN 3126 ENGINES
1200 PS50854 This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS50854" as the Part number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
Although this Program is to be administered as described above on the Affected Product, parts should be removed from parts stock as soon as possible.
The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the February 1, 2005 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Affected Product, Service Claim Allowance and Action Required.

PROBLEM
On certain 3126 engines that are equipped with 210 HP and lower ratings, the top piston ring is experiencing structural failure; approximately 180 degrees from the end gap without significant indication of ring scuffing or wear. As a result from this, it may result in scoring cylinder walls.

This service letter covers engines that may have excessive blowby by due to broken piston rings. When troubleshooting this repair use the following procedure.
Verify engine falls with in the serial number range of service letter.
Use Warranty Update # 0409 to troubleshoot excessive oil consumption or high blowby.
If engine is disassembled for excessive oil consumption or high blowby verify piston ring breakage.
Inspect each cylinder condition and determine if any cylinders are damaged beyond the hard honing process.
Complete cost analyst to determine most cost effective repair between sleeving block and replacing short block.
If most cost effective repair is sleeving block follow instructions in SEBF8192 "Specifications and salvage for cylinder blocks on 3114, 3116, 3126 and 3126B engines". Then use parts list Group 1 and chart 1 for hours allowed. If there is a top ring breakage, replace all 6 cylinder packs.
Note: If customer does not want to sleeve the block they
have the option to replace with short block. It is the customers responsibility to pay the difference between sleeve repair and short block replacement if sleeving is the most cost effective repair.
If most cost effective repair is replacing short block use parts list Group 2 and chart 2 for hours allowed. If short block is used verify date code is above 201-04 for latest piston packs.
This program only applies to engines that are in the 210 HP and lower rating.
