Inspect universal joints and mating yokes for damage to the key, keyway, threaded holes, and pilot diameters.
If damage is present, replace accordingly.
Clean the mating surface of the yoke assembly, including threaded holes and universal joint assembly, free of wax, dirt, debris, paint, and grease.
Clean the mating surface of the slip joint free of wax, dirt, debris, paint, and grease. Repeat for the opposite side.
Make sure that the torque converter and the transmission yokes are aligned and in phase.
Ensure that the universal joints are fully seated prior to tightening the bolts. Use one of the two following methods:
Use a suitable rubber or wood hammer to seat the universal joints in the yoke.
Use designated run-down bolts to seat the universal joints completely in the yoke.
Torque the run-down bolts in a sequential alternating X pattern.
Remove the old run-down bolts and replace with new bolts. Contact your Cat dealer for additional information.
Insert the bolts and static torque to 550 20 N m (405 15 lb ft) in a sequential alternating X pattern. Refer to Specifications, SENR3130, "Torque Specifications" for additional information on torque.
Check the static torque of the bolts and ensure that the bolts are tightened to a minimum of 530 N m (390 lb ft) and to a maximum of 570 N m (420 lb ft).
Perform a static torque check on the bolts 550 20 N m (405 15 lb ft) according to the maintenance interval listed in the maintenance interval schedule for the machine.Note: If the drive shaft is removed or the universal joint is removed or replaced, the bolts should be checked for static torque according to the maintenance interval schedule again. The maintenance interval would start over at removal or replacement.
