Key Switch connections to the Machine ECMThis diagnostic code is recorded when Cat ET does not recieve the expected information concerning the key reader module from the Machine ECM over the data link.Test Step 1. CHECK THE ET DIAGNOSTIC SCREEN.
Check the ET diagnostic screen for a communication error between the machine ECM and Cat ET.Note: The key reader communication diagnostic code is CID 1960 FMI 09.Expected Result:The ET reports CID 1960 FMI 09 as active or the diagnostic code has been logged.Results:
YES - The ET reports CID 1960 FMI 09 as active or the diagnostic code has been logged.Repair: Troubleshoot the CAN A data link connections between Cat ET and the machine ECM. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The diagnostic code has NOT been logged or the diagnostic is NOT active. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER TO THE KEY READER MODULE.
With the key switch in the ON position, check for system voltage between pin 1 of the key reader and ground. Expected Result:The voltage that is measured is approximately system voltage.Results:
YES - The voltage that is measured is approximately system voltage. The voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NO - System voltage is NOT present. The wiring harness has failed.Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE CAN A DATA LINK WIRING OF THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.
Disconnect the J2 harness connector from the machine ECM.
Install a jumper wire between pin F (wire F712-GY) and pin G (wire F711-GN) of the diagnostic connector.
At the J2 harness connector for the machine ECM, measure the resistance between pin J2-67 (wire F711-GN) and pin J2-68 (wire F712-GY) of the J2 connector for harness of the machine ECM.Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.Results:
YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The wiring for the CAN A data link between the ECM and the diagnostic connector is NOT correct.Repair: Check the wiring harness for signs of damage. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOP
NO - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The wiring is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. CHECK THE CAN A DATA LINK WIRING OF THE MACHINE HARNESS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.
The J2 wiring harness connector for the machine ECM remains disconnected.
