Schematic of the Transmission Speed Solenoid Valve (Third Speed) (1) Transmission speed solenoid valve (Third Speed). (2) Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM).The CID 0646 FMI 05 diagnostic code is recorded when the current of the solenoid circuit is below normal. The power train electronic control module (ECM) detects the fault. Transmission speed solenoid valve (1) is located on the transmission control valve.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code CID 0646 FMI 05 for the solenoid is active. Before you perform this procedure, refer to Table 1 in order to determine the contact on the connector and the wire number that corresponds to the failed circuit.
Table 1
Information on Speed Solenoid Valve
Fault    Connector Contact No. (1)    Wire No.
Transmission Speed Solenoid Valve (Third Speed)     J2-1     901-WH
( 1 ) Connector contact of the power train ECM.Note: All the solenoid return lines are joined together. The lines connect to contact J1-7 on connector J1 of power train ECM (2) (wire 975-WH).
Check for an open coil on the transmission speed solenoid valve (Third Speed).
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the suspected solenoid.
At the connector for transmission speed solenoid valve (1), measure the resistance between contact 1 and contact 2. The resistance should be about 30 Ohms.Expected Result: The resistance is about 30 Ohms. Results:
OK - There is about 30 Ohms between the contacts. Proceed to Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 30 Ohms. Replace the coil on the suspected solenoid. STOP.
Check the machine harness for continuity.
The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
Reconnect the suspected solenoid to the machine harness.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 and machine harness connector J2 from power train ECM (2) .
At the machine harness connector J1, check continuity between contact 7 of connector J1 and contact 1 of connector J2.Expected Result: There is continuity. Results:
OK - There is continuity. Go to Step 3.
NOT OK - There is no continuity between the contacts. The machine harness is faulty. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.
Check if the fault is still present.
Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Start the engine.
Enter the service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Clear all inactive faults.
Attempt to operate the machine in all gears. All gears may not be available.
Stop the machine.
Check for the CID 0646 FMI 05 diagnostic code for the solenoid.Expected Result: The CID 0646 FMI 05 diagnostic code for the solenoid is active. The "SERV CODE" is showing in the display. Results:
YES - The fault has not been corrected. It is unlikely that power train ECM (2) is faulty. Replace the solenoid. Perform the previous steps again. If the cause of the fault is not found, replace the power train ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace" for more information
