Schematic of the Cat Data Link circuits
Note: The diagram above is a simplified schematic of the connections for the Cat data link circuits. The schematic is electrically correct. However, not all of the possible harness connectors are shown. Refer to the latest revision of the Electrical Schematic, UENR3102 for the complete schematic.Transmission ECM
The following is a list of codes that are associated with the Cat® Data Link circuits of the machine.
Table 2
Transmission ECM (MID 81)
DTC Code Description System Response
248-9 Cat Data Link: Abnormal Update Rate The Transmission ECM will not be able to receive/send proper signal information with other ECM modules.
590-9 Engine Control Module: Abnormal Update Rate The Transmission ECM will not be able to send/receive proper signal information from the Engine ECM.
590-14 Engine Control Module: Special Instruction The Transmission ECM has not received all required signal information from the Engine ECM.
596-9 Implement Control: Abnormal Update Rate The Transmission ECM will not be able to send/receive proper signal information from the Implement ECM.
596-12 Implement Control: Bad Device or Component The Transmission ECM will not be able to send/receive proper signal information from the Implement ECM. This event indicates that there are steering parameters that are not being received from either data link.
596-14 Implement Control: Special Instruction The Transmission ECM has not received all required signal information from the Implement ECM. Possible causes for an FMI 9 Diagnostic code are:
A fuse for one of the ECM modules may have failed.
The software is incorrect or incompatible for one of the modules within the data link.
The machine harness has failed.
One of the ECM modules in the data link has failed.

Note: Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in this circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that the diagnostic code is active before performing a troubleshooting procedure. For sensors powered via the fuse panel, check the condition of the appropriate fuse before beginning the troubleshooting procedure.

2. Verify The Hardware And The Software Part Numbers(1)
A. The part number of the flash software for the ECM.
B. The part number of all components related to the faulty Data Link Circuit.
All part numbers are correct. OK - All part numbers are correct.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - All of the part numbers are not correct.
