Schematic of the Transmission Direction Switch (1) Transmission direction switch. (2) Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM).Transmission direction switch (1) has three inputs to the power train Electronic Control Module (ECM). Two inputs are normally open (N/O) and one normally closed (N/C). During normal operation, one of the inputs is grounded at all times. Refer to Table 1. If two or more inputs on the switch are shorted, a fault will be detected by power train ECM (2). The CID 0623 FMI 06 diagnostic code is displayed, when two or more inputs are shorted to ground. The test points for transmission direction switch (1) are at the pigtail harness connector of the transmission switches. The connector is located in the steering wheel.Note: Ensure that the desired fault CID 0623 FMI 06 is active. Before you perform this procedure, refer to Table 1 in order to determine the contacts and the wire numbers that correspond to the faulty circuit.

( 1 ) The connector contact on the power train ECM.Note: Wire 202-BK is connected to the frame ground.Note: The fault should not be present immediately after the key start switch is tuned ON. Power train ECM (2) waits for 30 seconds, before the fault is recorded.
Check the transmission direction switch.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from transmission direction switch (1) .
Check at the harness of the transmission direction switch (1) for continuity to ground. Activate transmission direction switch (1) to each position. Check the N/C contact and the N/O contacts. Refer to Table 1 for the correct status of transmission direction switch (1) .Expected Result: The continuity check agrees with Table 1.Results:
YES - The continuity check does agree with Table 1. The transmission direction switch is not faulty. Proceed to Step 2.
NO - Continuity check does not agree with Table 1. Replace the switch. STOP.
Check the machine harness for a short to ground.
The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
Reconnect the switch to the machine harness.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from power train ECM (2) .
At the machine harness connector J1 for power train ECM (2), check the continuity to ground contacts 2, 5, 7, 15, and 16 to the contacts 13, 14, and 30, while you activate transmission direction switch (1) to each position.Expected Result: Each resistance should be greater than 5000 Ohms.Results:
YES - The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Step 3.
NO - There is a short in the machine harness. The machine harness is faulty. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.
Check if the fault is still present.
Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
