Remove the valve cover base.
Remove the spark plug adapter.
Remove the exhaust manifold.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove water connector, thermostat housing, and connecting tube assemblies (1).
Remove tube assembly (2), bracket, and O-ring seal.
Remove bracket assemblies (3) and tube assemblies (5).
Set harness assemblies (4) to the side.

Remove elbow (6) and the O-ring seal.

Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (10). The weight of cylinder head (10) is approximately 135 kg (300 lb).
Remove bolts (11) and the washers.
Remove bolts (9) from cylinder head.
Remove cylinder head (10).

Remove cylinder head gasket (11).

Remove spacer plate (12) and the water ferrules.

Remove spacer plate gasket (13). Note: Remove dowels if necessary.
Repeat for the opposite side. Remove any hardware attached to the cylinder head before removal. Installation Procedure
Install cylinder head (10) in the reverse order of removal.
Install dowels if removed.
Install a new spacer plate gasket, water ferrules, and cylinder head gasket.

Apply clean engine oil to the threads of the large bolts and between the washers and the underside of the bolt heads.
Tighten Bolts 1 through 14 in the number sequence to 270 27 N m (200 18 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts 1 through 14 in the number sequence to 390 10 N m (289 7 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts 1 through 14 in the number sequence again to 390 10 N m (289 7 lb ft).
Install the rocker arm group.
Tighten Bolts 15 through 18 in the number sequence to 270 27 N m (200 18 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts 15 through 18 in the number sequence to 390 10 N m (289 7 lb ft).
Tighten Bolts 15 through 18 in the number sequence again to 390 10 N m (289 7 lb ft).
Install Bolts 19 through 27 and tighten in the number sequence to 43 7 N m (33 5 lb ft).
