Information:
1. Release the cooling system relief valve slowly to relieve pressure and remove filler cap. Inspect condition of cap gasket. Replace cap if necessary.2. It may be necessary to drain enough coolant from the system to allow for the addition of cooling system additive (conditioner).3. Add Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner. Add 1 liter (1 U.S. quart) of Caterpillar Cooling System Additive (Conditioner) for each 152 liters (40 U.S. gallon) of cooling system capacity. This will maintain the required 3% to 6% concentration of conditioner.Refer to the Refill Capacities chart in this publication for the cooling system capacity for your engine.
Do not use any Methoxypropanol-based antifreeze or coolants such as Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant in the cooling system. Methoxypropanol will cause some seals and gaskets to deteriorate and fail.
4. Maintain coolant level to within 13 mm (1/2 in) below the bottom of the filler tube or to the proper level (upper half) on the sight glass, if equipped. Add premixed coolant if necessary to bring the coolant to the proper level.Refer to the topic Cooling System Specifications in the Maintenance section for additional information about coolant mixture and supplemental coolant additive.5. Start the engine and check for leaks or damaged piping. Allow the coolant level to stabilize. Inspect the cooling system pipes and lines for leaks and/or damaged connections. Make repairs if necessary. Install the filler cap.Cooling System Cleaning
Approximately one week prior to draining the cooling system (at Every Two Year maintenance interval), add 2 liter (1/2 U.S. gal) of Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner, 6V4511, for every 30 liter (8 U.S. gal) of cooling system capacity.Continue to operate the engine for one week before draining.Refer to the topic, Cooling System-Clean/Flush in this publication or your Caterpillar dealer for more detailed information.Exhaust System
Inspect/Check For Leaks
Handle the soft-wrap shields carefully. Do not tear the stainless steel foil inside the heat shields. Torn foil will let the insulation absorb flammable liquids and a fire can result from engine heat. Any torn stainless steel foil inside the soft-wrap heat shields should be replaced.
Removal of exhaust manifold shields will be necessary to thoroughly inspect the exhaust system. Remove the exhaust shields and protect them. Damage could result to the shields when working on or around them. Check the exhaust system for leakage. Inspect the exhaust system bellows and connections for cracks, leaks and loose fasteners. Be sure to check around the gaskets and bellows assemblies. If leakage is discovered, replace the necessary components. Make repairs as necessary. Refer to the Service Manual for the necessary procedure.Electric Prelube Pump (If Equipped)
Lubricate with MPGM
Lubricate the two pump motor bearings. Use a hand operated grease gun and apply one pump of MPGM grease to each fitting.Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks and electrical connections for damaged or frayed wires.Engine Protection Devices
Check Shutoff Controls and Alarms For Proper Operation
Refer to the Service Manual for the procedure. All engine protective devices must be checked and maintained to provide the engine with proper protection if a component malfunction or failure
