3204 AND 3208 ENGINES IN ALL APPLICATIONSProblem:
The water pump impeller may have been improperly installed on some remanufactured water pumps for these engines. The impeller may not have been pressed far enough onto the water pump shaft. If the impeller is not pressed far enough onto the shaft, the impeller may contact the front gear housing when the water pump is installed in the engine. Solution:
This problem may occur on Remanufactured 0R-1242 (3204), 0R-0781 (3208), 0R-1244 (3208), or 0R-3997 (3208) Water Pumps with Date Codes prior to March, 1997. Before installing one of these remanufactured water pumps, check the clearance between the impeller and water pump housing.The clearance between the impeller and housing can be checked with a spacer from the 5P-7361 Water Pump Tool Group. Use the 5P-7350 Spacer to check the clearance of Remanufactured 0R-1242 (3204) Water Pumps. Use the 5P-7352 Spacer to check the clearance of Remanufactured 0R-0781 (3208), 0R-1244 (3208), or 0R-3997 (3208) Water Pumps. When the impeller is correctly installed, the spacer should be a slip fit between the impeller and the housing.If the clearance between the impeller and housing is not correct, refer to Special Instruction, SMHS7090, "Water Pump Reconditioning Using The 9N-3139 Rebuild Kit And 5P-7361 Tool Group".The above remanufactured water pumps with date codes after February 15, 1997 do not need to be checked. The Date Code is located below the Part Name and above the Part Number on the Part Number Tag attached to the shipping box. The Date Code is formatted as DDMMYYXXX. DD = the day of the month. MM = the month of the year. YY = the year. XXX = plant number.
