Remote Monitoring Requirements
Remote monitoring requires that a telematic system, such as Product Link, be installed on the machine or equipment to transmit the data off board. The external telematics battery backup kit works with the PL631, PL641, and PL241 telematics radio only and does not include any required hardware to install a data monitoring and recording device.Installation Procedure
Machine Preparation
Move the machine to a smooth, level location and away from other working machines and personnel.
Lower the implements to the ground.
Stop the engine.
Engage the parking brake for the machine.
Place the disconnect in the OFF position.
Observe any site-specific lockout tagout procedures.Installation of the Backup Battery Module

Backup Battery Fly Leads

Install one 9X-3401 Connector Pin on each of the three fly leads from the backup battery.
Insert the three leads through the 119-3662 Heat Shrink Tube.Install the three 9X-3401 Connector Pins into the 102-8803 Receptacle Kit. Refer to Table 5 for pin location in the receptacle.
Slide the 119-3662 Heat Shrink Tube over the back end of the connector. Use an appropriate heat source and shrink the 119-3662 Heat Shrink Tube over the back of the connector and wires to create a seal.
Locate the backup battery next to the telematics radio or as close as possible. Use one of the following to secure the backup battery in place:
499-6721 Tape
532-4544 Tape
526-6458 Adhesive Tape
3S-2093 Cable StrapNote: Due to the large number of possible applications, Caterpillar is unable to provide a recommended mounting location. The installer is to determine the appropriate mounting location.Note: During installation, it is important to protect wiring in key locations. Key locations are any area where the wiring could be nicked or cut and come in contact with the chassis. Avoid installation practices where there could be excessive flexing, chafing, or cutting of the wiring.Installation of the Backup Harness
Detach the 12-pin plug on the telematics harness in the machine currently from the telematics radio.
Connect the 542-6597 Control Harness As or the 548-6990 Control Harness As to the telematics harness.
Connect the opposite end of the 542-6597 Control Harness As or the 548-6990 Control Harness As to the telematics radio.
Connect the 542-6597 Control Harness As or the 548-6990 Control Harness As three-pin plug to the backup battery.Note: In the event the backup battery cannot be placed next to the telematics radio and the 542-6597 Control Harness As or the 548-6990 Control Harness As will not reach, an extension harness can be made.Correct length of 136-5321 Cable As, three 9X-3401 Connector Pins, three 9X-3402 Connector Sockets, one 155-2260 Connecting Plug Kit, and one 102-8803 Receptacle Kit are needed.All parts are ordered separately and not included in any kit from above.Note: Electrical connections should avoid sharp bends at connectors, sharp edges, and chafing surfaces. Harnesses should be supported at no less than 30.48 cm (12.0 inch) intervals.Note: Remote mounting the battery away from the telematics radio will decrease its efficiency and reduce the number of
