3406 Truck EnginesThe ability to increase the horsepower rating of an engine is an advantage for owners/operators and owners of small truck fleets. For example, used trucks can be purchased, and their horsepower ratings can be increased to meet the owner's need.
Consist lists are now available for conversion of direct injection 3406 Truck Engines to higher horsepower arrangements. The lists have the parts changes and the fuel adjustments necessary to increase the horsepower to a higher rating as approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The chart which follows shows the consist lists which are available.
Dealers can get the consist lists through Engine Product Analysts in Service Engineering. They will need to know the engine serial number, the current arrangement number and the type of conversion desired.
Conversion Of The Engine
The complete conversion to the new arrangement must be made.
Servicemen who work on governors must seal the governors after the work is complete. The 5P1660 and 8S8157 Governor Sealing Tool Groups must be used to seal the governor, for protection of the serviceman and the dealership.
After the work on the engine is complete, a new label with the correct Engine Exhaust Emission Control Information must be installed on the engine. This label also is available from the Product Analyst. Then, the Engine Identification Plate must be restamped with the new engine arrangement number, the rack setting, the high idle setting, the fuel setting, the horsepower rating and the full load rpm. If there is not space on the plate to make this information, a new plate must be purchased from Caterpillar, marked, and installed on the engine.
The Clean Air Act prohibits the removal of or rendering inoperative any emission control device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle engine. A civil penalty of up to $10,000 per infraction may be imposed upon conviction.
