Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the steering and brake hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the steering and brake hydraulic system before hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will prevent dirt from entering the internal components.
Slowly depress the breaker valve in order to release the pressure in the steering hydraulic tank. The breaker valve is located on the top of the steering hydraulic tank. Remove the filler cap on the steering hydraulic tank after all of the pressure has been released.
Drain the oil from the steering hydraulic tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7092, "Steering System Oil - Change". The capacity of the steering hydraulic tank is 34 L (9 US gal).
