Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Some commercial oils that meet API specifications may require shorter oil change intervals. The oil change intervals are determined by close monitoring of the oil condition and engine wear metals. Caterpillar prefers the scheduled oil sampling as the proper method of checking engine wear metals.Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the latest oil recommendations. The machine must be level and the parking brake engaged. The oil must be warm and the engine must be stopped.

(1) Engine oil filters
Remove the used engine oil filters (1) and discard the used engine oil filters (1). Note: In order to avoid possible burns, remove engine oil filters (1) when engine oil filters (1) are cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Engine oil filters (1) are located under the left front fender. Oil will be trapped in the oil filter base assemblies. A plug is located on the oil filter base assemblies. Drain the oil above the engine oil filters (1) into a suitable container. Refer to Service Magazine, 18, August 1997, "Improved Elbow Design For Draining Oil Filters" for additional information.
Clean the oil filter base assemblies. Make sure that all of the former gaskets are removed.
Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the seals of the new engine oil filters (1).
Install engine oil filters (1) hand tight until the seals of engine oil filters (1) contact the base. Tighten engine oil filters (1) for one additional full turn. Note: There are rotation index marks on each engine oil filter (1) that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten engine oil filters (1) for an additional full turn, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
