DIESEL 3500 SERIES STANDARD DISPLACEMENT ENGINES
History
In an ongoing effort to support increased D3500 engine value, a new piston design has been introduced. In November 2003, (Ref: Engine News SEBD9327 dated 2003/11/01) Caterpillar announced discontinuing usage of two piece piston in diesel 3500 series standard stroke engines. Replacing the two piece (steel crown & aluminum skirt) piston assembly is a newly designed single piece forged steel (SPFS) piston (See Table A).
The SPFS piston has the same balance weight as the previous two-piece pistons and, along with related components (cooling jet, retainer and piston pin), can be interchanged as service replacement of the former two piece piston in any quantity. The SPFS piston requires installation of a new oil jet tube assembly (Cat P/N: 204-5447) and cooling jet tube retainer assembly (Cat P/N: 193- 3282). Additionally, the Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services has announced repair option cylinder packs containing the SPFS piston. The previous remanufactured cylinder packs containing the two-piece pistons (steel crown & aluminum skirt) are being exhausted from inventory and will be replaced by the new remanufactured SPFS cylinder packs.
Effectivity
Effective S/N: All Diesel 3500 Series Standard Stroke Engines (Not applicable to the Diesel 3500B Series High Displacement Engines)
: FAILURE TO USE THE CORRECT OIL JET TUBE ASSEMBLY AND RETAINER ASSEMBLY WITH THE SPFS PISTON WILL CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE.

The previous standard displacement two-piece piston assemblies will be accepted as Cat P/Ns:10R-1816 and 10R-1817 cylinder pack core. See Core Acceptance Guideline SELD0016 for complete core acceptance details.

Also refer to other CMIS 2 inquiry applications such as Customer Profiles, Inspection Reason Codes, Inspection Line Inquiry, Add Charge Information, Entitlement Activity, Entitlement Inquiry, CCR Inquiry, CCR Entry, Shipment Processing; Process Packaging Grief; and Reporting to properly manage core returns and monitor inspection performance.
