Schematic of the Forward SwitchThis diagnostic code is recorded when status of the direction switch is wrong. When the switch is in REVERSE, the Normally Open circuit is grounded and the Normally Closed circuit is open. When the switch is in FORWARD or NEUTRAL, the Normally Open circuit is open and the Normally Closed circuit is grounded. A diagnostic code is recorded when the status of the direction switch does not match the signal from the position sensor (direction selector). There will be no backup system for the position sensor (direction selector) if the sensor fails. Test Step 1. CHECK THE DIRECTION SWITCH.
Check the screws that hold the direction switch to the console. Tighten any loose screws.
If the problem persists, loosen the screws on the direction switch and rotate the switch slightly.
Tighten the screws. Change the direction of the machine and then determine if the diagnostic code is still present.
If the problem still exists, loosen the screws on the direction switch. Rotate the switch in the opposite direction slightly.
Tighten the screws. Change the direction of the machine and then determine if the diagnostic code is still present.
Determine if the CID 2121 FMI 07 is present.Expected Result:CID 2121 FMI 07 is present. Results:
OK - CID 2121 FMI 07 is present. Repair: The problem has not been corrected. The direction switch may have failed. Replace the direction switch. Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. NOT OK - CID 2121 FMI 07 is not present. Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
