Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an occurrence for engine overcrank or use this procedure if the following event code is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".
Table 1
Event Code
Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
E225(3) Engine Overcrank The engine did not start within the programmed parameters for engine starting. The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated. Probable Causes
Fuel supply
Faulty starting motor circuit
Faulty speed/timing circuit
Active diagnostic codes
Incorrect base timing
Fuel quality
Programmable parametersRecommended Actions
Fuel Supply
Use Cat ET to check that the engine's fuel parameters are correct for the fuel that is being used. If necessary, perform fuel analysis in order to confirm the fuel quality.Verify that the fuel pressure is correct. When possible, interview the operator in order to determine if fuel quality is in question. Try to determine if the source of the fuel has been changed.Ensure that fuel is supplied at a sufficient pressure that is stable. Check that the size of the fuel line is sufficient. Inspect the fuel system for leaks. The following conditions can affect engine starting:
Low fuel pressure
High fuel pressure
Poor fuel qualityInspect the following fuel system components:
Fuel filter
Gas pressure regulator
Gas shutoff valve
Fuel metering valveCheck the fuel metering valve's status indicator that is located on the top of the valve. If the status indicator is flashing orange or flashing red there is an internal error for the valve. Before performing maintenance on the valve, observe the status indicator. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7630, "WOODWARD RAPTOR GAS REGULATION AND METERING VALVE/ACTUATOR SYSTEM" for detailed information about flash codes and for information that is related to troubleshooting the fuel metering valve.Verify that the system's components are operating correctly.Repair suspect components. Replace the fuel filter, if necessary.Faulty Starting Motor Circuit
Check the air supply if the engine is equipped with an air starting motor. For engines that are equipped with electric starting motors, check the battery connections and the requirements for the cable sizes.Attempt to start the engine while you observe the "Starter Motor Relay" parameter on Cat ET.If the status of the relay for the starting motor indicates that the engine should crank but no cranking occurs, troubleshoot the starting circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Starting - Test".Faulty Speed/Timing Circuit
Attempt to start the engine. Use Cat ET to observe the "Engine Speed" parameter for an indication of engine rpm. The master Electronic Control Module (ECM) must detect a minimum of 50 rpm before the gas and the ignition are supplied to the engine. If no engine speed is displayed on Cat ET or if the engine speed is unstable, troubleshoot the speed/timing sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Speed/Timing - Test" in order to troubleshoot this problem.Active Diagnostic Codes
Check for active diagnostic codes that relate to the ignition system. If there are any active diagnostic codes that are
