Sensor Locations
Different applications may have different sensors. Some of the sensors are optional. The following illustrations show the locations of sensors for 3600 Engines. For both the in-line engines and the vee engines, most of the sensors have the same location. For sensors that are at different locations, the differences are shown.

Speed sensor for torsional detection
For generator set engines, a speed sensor is located within the guard for the generator coupling. The speed of the gear teeth is monitored in order to detect erratic movement. Excessive torsional motion can cause an alarm or a shutdown.

(1) Speed sensor for the turbine wheel
(2) Speed sensors (magnetic pickups) for the flywheel ring gear The rpm of the turbine wheel is detected by speed sensor (1). The sensor is inside of the turbocharger housing.The rpm of the flywheel ring gear is detected by speed sensors (magnetic pickups) (2). The information is sent to the governor and the tachometer. An overspeed will cause an engine shutdown.

(3) Sensor for oil temperature
(4) Sensor for oil pressure before the oil filters

(7) Sensor for oil pressure A sensor in the oil temperature regulator housing (3) helps to monitor the oil temperature. Excessive oil temperature can cause an alarm or a shutdown.Pressure sensors are located before the oil filters (4) and after the oil filters (5). Oil filter differential pressure is calculated from the difference between the pressure before the filters and the pressure after the filters. High differential pressure can cause an alarm or a shutdown.Jacket water pressure is detected by pressure sensor (6) that is located on the elbow at the outlet of the jacket water pump. Low jacket water pressure will activate an alarm.The engine oil pressure is monitored by pressure sensor (7). Low oil pressure can cause an alarm or a shutdown.
