Information:

You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Clean/Flush Cooling System
Drain the coolant earlier whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. For engines using ELC, the cooling system needs to be cleaned and flushed every 6000 hours or 4 years. CLEAN WATER is the only system cleaning/flushing agent required if ELC was previously used. When changing to ELC, Caterpillar cleaner should be used. After the cleaning solution has been drained, it is VERY IMPORTANT that a thorough water flush be used to remove ALL of the cleaning agent. For more information on adding Extender to your cooling system, refer to the Cooling System Specifications or contact your Caterpillar dealer.Drain the coolant earlier whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed.
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material under the topic Cooling System Specifications in the Maintenance Section of this manual.
Mixing ELC with other products will reduce the effectiveness of the coolant. This could result in damage to cooling system components. If Caterpillar products are not available and commercial products must be used, make sure they have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for pre-mixed or concentrate coolants and Caterpillar Extender.
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material under the topic Cooling System Specifications in the Maintenance Section of this manual.
Use the following procedure to clean the cooling system:1. Allow the engine and radiator to cool.2. Raise the hood. Engage the hood support latch.3. Remove radiator cap (1) slowly to relieve any pressure.4. Attach a hose to radiator drain valve nipple (2). Open the drain valve. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.5. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water.6. Start and run the engine until a cooling system temperature is 49 to 66°C (120 to 150°F). Stop the engine. Allow the engine to cool.7. Drain and flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is clear. Allow the system to drain fully. Close the drain valve.
The cooling system operates under pressure which is controlled by the radiator pressure cap. Removing the cap while the system is hot may allow escape of hot coolant and steam, causing serious burns. Before removing the radiator cap, allow the system to cool. Use a thick cloth and turn the radiator cap slowly to the first stop to allow pressure to escape before fully removing the cap.Avoid contact with coolant.
To prevent engine damage, never add coolant to an overheated engine. Always allow the engine to cool first.
8. Fill the system with coolant until the level is to the bottom of the filler neck. See the Cooling System Specifications topic in this manual for information on choosing the proper coolant.9. Run engine until operating temperature is reached. Stop the engine. Allow the engine to cool.10. Remove the radiator cap. Add coolant as necessary to maintain the level to the bottom of the filler neck.
