Remove the belts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Belt - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use a vehicle that has forks to support the inboard idler wheel (3). Remove two bolts (2) and remove the idler wheel from the spindle assembly. The weight of the idler wheel is 170 kg (375 lb).
Rotate the hub until magnetic drain plug (1) is located at the bottom of the hub.
Use a suitable container to drain the oil from the hub. Remove magnetic drain plug (1) and the O-ring seal from the hub. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Front Idler Hubs Oil - Change" for the machine that is being serviced.

Note: When the adjustment shims are replaced, the removal of the axle spindle is not required. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to the hub, as shown. It is not necessary to remove all of the bolts in order to remove shims (5). Loosen bolts (6) for the shim half and remove the shim. Install the new shim half and install bolts (6). Use the same method for the other shim half.
Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to the hub in order to support the hub.
Remove bolts (6) from the shim half on one side of spindle (4). Remove shim (5) on this side of the spindle.
Remove bolts (6) for the shim half on the other side of spindle (4). Remove the shim (5) on this side of the spindle.

Remove bolts (9), hub cap (13), the plug, and the gasket from hub (11) .
Bend the tang of bearing lockwasher (8) away from the slot in locknut (7) .
Remove locknut (7) from spindle (4) by using tool (A). Remove lockwasher (8) and tongue washer (14) .
Use two persons and remove hub (11) from spindle (4). The weight of the hub is 27 kg (60 lb).
Remove Duo-Cone seals (12) from hub (11) and spindle (4) .
Remove bearing cone (15) and roller bearing cup (10) .
Remove roller bearing cone (17) and roller bearing cup (16) .
Use forcing screws that are 5/8 inch - 11 NC in order to remove spindle (4) from axle (18) .
