SEAL-O-RING 2539950 - Caterpillar

Note: The removal procedures for the front axle shafts and for the rear axle shafts are identical.Note: The axle shafts can be removed while the axle assemblies are still on the machine. If the axle assemblies are still installed, chock the wheels and connect the steering frame lock before you perform the removal procedure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".
If the axle assembly is still on the machine, drain the oil from the axle housing and from the final drives into a suitable container. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change"

Install Tooling (A), and a suitable lifting device on cover assembly (2), as shown.
Remove bolts (1) and cover assembly (2). The weight of cover assembly (2) is approximately 36 kg (80 lb).

Remove O-ring seal (3).
Attach Tooling (C) to the end of axle shaft (4). Use Tooling (C) in order to pull axle shaft (4) from the final drive by approximately 762 mm (30 inch).
Remove Tooling (C).
Attach a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (4), as shown. Remove axle shaft (4). The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 113 kg (250 lb).

Use Tooling (B) in order to remove retaining ring (5).

Remove sun gear (6) and spacer (7) from axle shaft (4).
Repeat the procedure for the remaining axle shaft. Installation Procedure

Attach a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (4). Install axle shaft (4) in the final drive. The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 113 kg (250 lb). Remove the suitable lifting device.
Slide Tooling (D) over the end of axle shaft (4), as shown. Use Tooling (D) in order to guide axle shaft (4) in the splines of the service brake and of the differential. Remove Tooling (D).

Install spacer (7) and sun gear (6) on the end of axle shaft (4). Align sun gear (6) with the planetary gears and slide sun gear (6) completely onto axle shaft (4). Note: It may be necessary to rotate the wheel assembly in order to align sun gear (6) with the planetary gears. If the axle assembly and the tires are still installed on the machine, the tire must be raised off the ground in order to rotate the wheel assembly.
Use Tooling (B) in order to install retaining ring (5).
Install O-ring seal (3) in the groove of the final drive assembly.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto cover assembly (2). The weight of cover assembly (2) is approximately 36 kg (80 lb). Install cover assembly (2) and bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 120 20 N m (90 15 lb
