Many fuel system problems are misdiagnosed as fuel injection pump problems. Before the fuel injection pump is considered suspect, the low pressure fuel system should be checked. The following list contains examples of symptoms which would not necessarily indicate the fuel injection pump as the main source of the problem:
Low power
Hard starting
Excessive black smoke or white smoke
StallingCheck the low pressure fuel system first, before attempting any repairs to the fuel injection pump. Use the following steps to help guide you to the source of the fuel system problems.
Check the condition of the fuel filter and the condition of the water separator. If the components are full of water or sediment the fuel problem could be related to dirty fuel or excessive water in the fuel. Daily maintenance must be performed on the fuel filter and water separator elements. In addition, the filter elements must be changed at regular intervals. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the recommendations may lead to severe fuel system problems.
Check the quality of the fuel.Fuel with an API rating that is greater than 35 will produce lower power. Low power complaints may be due to fuel with a high API rating. Check the fuel API rating whenever a low power complaint is encountered. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your specific application for more information.Fuel suppliers should compensate for the loss of lubricity in low sulfur fuels by the use of other additives. Use of fuels that do not meet Caterpillar's minimum specifications for lubricity can result in severe fuel system problems. Aftermarket additives are available to treat such fuels in order to improve the life of the fuel injection pump. If the lubricity of the fuel does not meet the minimum requirements, consult your fuel supplier. Do not treat the fuel without consulting the fuel supplier. Some additives are not compatible. Some additives can cause problems in the fuel system.
Check the low pressure fuel lines. If the engine has an intermittent problem of stalling the problem may be in the low pressure fuel lines. Also, if the engine has an intermittent starting problem the problem may be in the low pressure fuel lines. Check for the following conditions:
Loose lines
Plugged linesEnsure that the fuel line fittings and seals are properly installed in order to eliminate introducing air into the fuel system.
Check the lift pump (transfer pump). The lift pump (transfer pump) on these engines may be equipped with a small filter on the inlet side of the fuel injection pump. Check the condition of this filter. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your specific engine application. The fuel filter for the lift pump should be checked and replaced at the same time as the primary fuel filter and the filter for the water separator are changed.Check the fuel pressure at the lift pump (transfer pump). The pressure should be
