Due to the difficulty in measuring for reuse, some additional guidance is detailed below:
Parts and measuring devices should be as close to 20° C (68 ° F) as possible at the time of measurement. Part size will vary some with temperature and can potentially give false measurements if temperature is not controlled.
If the journal measures below reuse specification, closely inspect the entire journal surface for any wear step. If no detectable wear step is present, indicating that no wear has occurred, the journal can be considered reusable without reconditioning.
If, the spindle journals can be measured in a safe manner in the horizontal position, do so. Measuring the spindle journals in this orientation has ergonomic advantages for the technician and can result in more accurate measurements.
