Read and understand the operating section of the operation and maintenance manual for your machine, before attempting to operate this machine. Check the hydraulic oil daily, do not operate with low levels.In cold weather be sure the hydraulic oil is at operating temperature before turning the All Wheel Drive (AWD) on.
Pay close attention to the Recommended Lubricant Viscosity (for the expected ambient temperature) for the hydraulic system, as stated in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, for the standard 140G motor grader. Use of the incorrect oil could result in All Wheel Drive component failure.
Start the engine. For the correct starting procedures, see "Starting the Engine" in the operation and maintenance manual for your machine. Move switch (1) to the on position. The GREEN indicator (2) on the EMS panel will come on. This indicates the system is activated. The All Wheel Drive system will not operate unless the engine is running and the transmission is operating in FORWARD or REVERSE gears 1st through 5th and the modulating pedal is engaged.
Do not keep your foot on the modulating pedal when operating the unit. This practice may prevent the (AWD) from engaging.
To Set Normal Operating Pressure:
1. Move the transmission shift lever to 2nd gear forward. Set the engine rpm to near maximum. 2. Move the torque control lever (1) forward until it is approximately one half through its travel range. This setting should provide adequate rimpull and steering control for most applications.3. If excessive tire slip occurs at this pressure setting, move the control rearward to reduce rimpull enough to stop the tires from slipping.4. If the mid range setting does not provide the desired rimpull, move the lever forward until the required rimpull is reached.
Always place the torque control lever at the lowest position possible that will allow the machine to perform with a minimum of wheel slip.Use of excessive All Wheel Drive (AWD) torque when not needed will result in wasted power, wasted fuel and will cause excessive heat build up in the hydraulic system and cause increased tire wear.
Front wheel drive system pressure (rimpull) can be reduced slightly from the set position by reducing engine rpm. This allows the operator some control of front wheel slip without the need to change the position of the torque control lever.In soft material or sand, excessive rimpull will result in bouncing of the front end. Reduce the control lever setting or lower the rpm to control the bounce.When operating in high ambient temperature and the hydraulic temperature indicator on the EMS panel comes on, this indicates excessive heat in the hydraulic system. Continue to operate the machine, but move the torque control lever (1) to its minimum setting.Keep the All Wheel Drive (AWD) system switch (2) on to circulate oil through the oil cooler. Use the control lever to reduce pressure to the wheel motors until the hydraulic temperature indicator goes out.Changing Gears and Direction
