The Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch sends two inputs to the Brake ECM. During normal operation, one input is open and the other input is grounded. An FMI 03 diagnostic indicates the Brake ECM has determined the voltage in the Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch circuit is above normal. Possible causes for this diagnostic code are:
The Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch has failed.
The circuit ground wire is open.
One or both the circuit input lines are open.
One or both the circuit input lines is shorted to the + battery.
The Brake ECM may have failed, but is unlikely.Note: Poor connections are often the cause of a problem in electrical circuits. Before performing this procedure, inspect all the machine harnesses and connectors involved in the circuit. Make sure to verify that all of the connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Correct any problems found with any of the connections. Verify the diagnostic code CID 0713 FMI 03 is still active, before continuing with this procedure.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore all the created diagnostic codes now, but clear all those codes after the cause for the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR, THE ECM, AND THE MACHINE HARNESSES.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Remove the Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch from the machine harness connector.
On the harness connect for the switch, use wire jumpers to connect contact 1 wire K985-BR(Brown) and contact 3 wire K986-PK(Pink) to contact 2 wire J764-BR(Brown)
Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Observe the status of the diagnostic code. Expected Result:The diagnostic code remains active and unchanged. Results:
YES - The CID 0713 FMI 03 code remains active and unchanged. The switch is not causing the problem. The harness connector has failed, or the ECM may have failed. Go to Test Step 2.
NO - The code is no longer active and has been replaced by an active CID 0713 FMI 04 code. Repair: The Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch has failed. Replace the switch.Go to Test Step 8.Test Step 2. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT AT THE SWITCH.
Remove all previously installed jumper wires.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
At the Auto Retard Control (ARC) ON/OFF switch connector, measure the resistance between contact 2 wire J764-BR(Brown) of the switch connector and frame ground. Expected Result:The measurement is less than 5 ohms.Results:
