Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.Stop the engine and remove the key.Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
An initial test for lift cylinder drift should be done before isolating the lift cylinders. Reference: For more information about the lift cylinder drift test, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Lift and Tilt Cylinder Drift - Check" for the machine that is being serviced.Isolating the lift cylinders one at a time will determine if a lift cylinder is causing the drift problem. When the oil port at the end of one of the lift cylinders is blocked, that lift cylinder should not move during a drift test. If the lift cylinder drift is not within specifications, there is internal leakage in the lift cylinder. If the lift cylinder drift is within specifications, then there may be leakage in the implement control valve.Machine Preparation for Testing

Start the engine. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.
Engage the parking brake.
Move the steering frame lock to the locked position.
Raise the bucket off the ground approximately 1 m (3.3 ft). Place a support block under the bucket. Lower the bucket onto the support block.
Stop the engine.
When the engine has stopped, turn the engine start switch key to the ON position. Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions in order to release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Place the lift control lever in the FLOAT position. Place the tilt control lever in the HOLD position.
Push in the plunger for the hydraulic tank breaker relief valve in order to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic oil tank.
Release all hydraulic pressure before any fitting, any hose, or any component is loosened, tightened, removed, or adjusted.Reference: For more information about releasing system hydraulic pressure, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
Disconnect the hose that connects to the head end of one of the lift cylinders.Install a 5P-4020 Cover with a 4F-7952 O-Ring Seal and two 1P-4578 Half Flanges to the mating surface of the hose.Install two 1P-4578 Half Flanges, four 8T-4196 Bolts,
