Transmission In FIRST Speed
No. 2 clutch (5) and No. 5 clutch (12) are engaged in FIRST speed. Torque is sent from the torque converter to input shaft (15) . Sun gear (19) is splined to input shaft (15) . The sun gear and the input shaft rotate together. No. 2 clutch (5) holds ring gear (4) . Sun gear (19) spins planetary gears (6) . Since ring gear (4) is being held, planetary gears (6) walk around the inside of ring gear (4) . This drives planetary carrier (14) in the same direction as the input shaft. Planetary carrier (14) is splined to No. 5 clutch housing (24) . No. 5 clutch housing (24) now rotates with the planetary carrier.Hub gear (17) is splined to output shaft (16) . When No. 5 clutch (12) is engaged, the clutch holds hub gear (17) . Now planetary carrier (14) , clutch housing (24) , No. 5 clutch (12) , hub gear (17) and output shaft (16) rotate as a unit. Torque is now sent to the transfer gears.Transmission In SECOND Speed
No. 1 clutch (2) and No. 5 clutch (12) are engaged in SECOND speed. Sun gear (18) and sun gear (19) are splined to input shaft (15) . The sun gears and the input shaft rotate together. Sun gear (18) rotates planetary gears (1) . Since ring gear (3) is being held by No. 1 clutch (2) , planetary gears (1) walk around the inside of ring gear (3) . This drives planetary carrier (13) in the same direction as the input shaft. Ring gear (4) is splined to planetary carrier (13) . The ring gear and the planetary gear rotate together. Sun gear (19) rotates planetary gears (6) . Since ring gear (4) is also rotating planetary gears (6) , planetary carrier (14) is being driven in the same direction as input shaft (15) . Carrier (14) is splined to No. 5 clutch housing (24) . The carrier and the clutch housing rotate together.Hub gear (17) is splined to output shaft (16) . No. 5 clutch (12) holds hub gear (17) , when the clutch is engaged. Now planetary carrier (14) , clutch housing (24) , No. 5 clutch (12) , hub gear (17) and output shaft (16) rotate as a unit.
