Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine.To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps.Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.
Make sure you read and understand the information in the topics Safety and Cooling System Specifications for all information pertaining to water, antifreeze and supplemental coolant additive requirements before you proceed with maintenance of the cooling system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.The filler cap is located under the access door on the top, left-hand side of the radiator guard.
Slowly loosen the filler cap in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the filler cap.

(1) Access plate
Remove two bolts and washers that secure access plate (1) to the radiator bottom guard. Remove the access plate.
Pull down the drain hose (not shown) that is stored above the radiator bottom guard. Clean the area surrounding the drain hose and the radiator drain valve, as needed.
Remove the plug (if equipped) from the end of the drain hose. Open the radiator drain valve. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
Close the radiator drain valve. Fill the system with a solution which consists of clean water and of cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner should be 6 to 10 percent.
Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine. Drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
While the engine is stopped, flush the system with water. Flush the system until the draining water is clear.
Close the radiator drain valve. Install the plug (if equipped) on the end of the drain hose. Store the drain hose above the radiator bottom guard.
Install access plate (1) on the radiator bottom guard.

Start the engine. Run the engine without the filler cap until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.

(2) Coolant level sight gauge
Open the left-hand engine compartment door. Coolant level sight gauge (2) is located in front of the fuel system primary filter base.
Coolant should cover coolant level sight gauge (2) completely. Make necessary adjustments to the coolant level. Add coolant to bring the level to the bottom of the filler tube in the top radiator tank.
