Transmissions
Change Oil - Clean Breathers and Screens
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
1. Remove the transmission drain plug. Allow the oil to drain. 2. Remove the oil sump drain plug. Allow the oil to drain.3. Change the transmission oil filter element. Clean the magnetic strainer. See the topic "Transmissions" under "Every 500 Service Hours or 3 Months."Transmission Sump Screen
1. Remove the four cover bolts. Remove the cover and screen assembly. 2. Remove screen retaining nut (1). Separate screen (2) from cover (3). Wash the cover and screen in clean, nonflammable solvent. Shake the screen to remove excess solvent. Allow the parts to dry.3. Assemble the screen onto the cover. Replace the cover seal if it is damaged.4. Install the screen and cover assembly. Install the retaining bolts.Breathers
1. Remove the breather on the transmission sump shown above, and also the breather at the flywheel housing (not shown).2. Wash the breathers in clean, nonflammable solvent. Shake the element to remove excess solvent. Allow the breather to dry.3. Oil the element lightly. Install the breather. 4. Remove the fill cap. Fill the transmission with oil. See the "Refill Capacities" chart.5. Install the fill cap. Start the engine to fill the filters. Check for leaks. 6. Check the oil level with the engine running at LOW IDLE. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.627E Only
Repeat the procedures shown, in the same sequence, for the scraper transmission, breather and filter element shown above. Start and run in neutral until transmission oil level stabilizes.Differential and Final Drives Breathers
Clean Breathers
1. Remove the breather.2. Wash the breather in clean, nonflammable solvent.3. Shake it to remove excess solvent. Allow it to dry.4. Install the breather.627E Only
Repeat the entire procedure in the same sequence for the scraper differential and final drives breather.Wheels
Check Coolant Level
With a lack of wheel coolant, the brakes can generate enough heat to burn the tire bead. A burning bead produces gases inside the tires that can explode, endangering personnel within 500 m (1500 ft).
621E Scraper
1. Position each tractor and scraper wheel with the coolant fill plug level with the center of the axle.621E Tractor - 627E Tractor and Scraper
2. Remove the fill plug. Maintain the coolant level to the bottom of the plug opening. Install the plug.Air Dryer
Change Desiccant
The desiccant cartridge should be rebuilt or replaced when it can no longer absorb water. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for parts or service.Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)
Torque Bolts
Tighten all Rollover Protective Structure mounting bolts to 750 80 N m (550 60 lb ft).Make a visual inspection of the ROPS. If cracks are found in the structure, or if there are damaged or broken components, contact your Caterpillar dealer for any necessary repairs.
